Myanmar has full of festivals throughout year. Mostly after rainy season, the pagoda festivals are held every part of country in small to large scale. In this programme, we would like to introduce a large festival “Hot air baloon” in Taungyi, the capital of Shan State and “Shwezigon” pagoda festival in Bagan and a small Nat event in Mt Popa.
“Hot air balloon” festival / Peak days 11th -14th waxing day of Tazaungmone * 22~25 Nov 2015
Taunggyi is the capital of Shan State and is at an elevation of 4,712 feet (1,436 m) above sea level. The name Taunggyi means “big mountain” . The Taunggyi hot-air balloon competition is one of the most popular festivals in Myanmar during winter. Traditionally this balloon raising ceremony is to pay homage to Sulamuni Pagoda said to be in the abode of the celestial beings by sending up lighted hot air balloons. The festival is also a competition by who can send up the most elaborate and decorated hot air balloons.
The hot-air balloons are made up of hand-made paper beautifully designed with colorful fireworks and firecrackers. It is divided into 2 parts: day for amateur and night for professional locally called Mee Gyi Seinnaban. In the Day part, the balloons released are made in the form of the elephant, pig, cow, birds, duck, etc. Seinnaban Mee Gyi and party release in the night. Seinnaban means “diamond earrings that emphasizes the beauty.” Although more famous night balloon is, the balloon during the day is still impressive. When launching, the amorphous pile rising up slowly in hot and fantastic creatures in various forms appear slowly and drift into winter wind. Some entries are not as lucky, a gust of wind or a touch reckless and wandering torch cause damage the creations. This festival is held annually and is accompanied by a procession of communal monk robe weaving. Monk robe offering ceremony is celebrated on full moon day of Tazaungmone.
“Shwezigon” pagoda festival / Peak days on 13th waxing to 1st waning of Tazaungmone * 24~27 Nov 2015
Shwezigone pagoda festival is held in lunar calendar Tazaungmone usually fall in November. The festival is visited by thousand of villagers from around the pagoda. There are evening entertainment programs such as Zat (a variety of dances, songs, short and long plays), Anyeint (a performance of a few hours in which a number of ‘jokers’ caricature current situations). Open air screenings of popular movies are also sometimes shown. There are food stalls, shops selling local products, magic shows, puppet shows so on. The little girls are in their best dress and put on maybe a little bit too much make up.
On full moon day (10 Nov.), there is a communal offering of food and various domestic articles to the monks from the nearby monasteries. The festivities will start to wind down after the full moon peak.
NAT Offertories changing, Mt Popa
The eve and full moon day of Tazaung Mone. (Nov. 25 – 26, 2015)
This is the small event. New offertories are being changed. The believers come for such offertories are changed to new ones. The Nat medium plays performing service between the believers and spiritual statue.Nat-worshipers and the followers join in the any Nat festival with either a strong belief or for mere fun.
Day 01/ 21 Nov 2015 Arrival Yangon ( Any available flight ) ( – / – / D )
Welcome at airport for each individual group. Transfer to hotel. Dress up and make the day at own idea. At 4 PM meet at hotel’s lobby then group tour starts to Shwedagon pagoda, the most prominent land mark of Yangon. Welcome dinner at Golden duck restaurant at the south of Shwedagon pagoda.
Day 02/ 22 Nov 2015 Yangon-Heho flight Etd 14:30 ( 1:10 hr flying) ( B / L / D )
Morning tour to Yangon city center – walking down to main roads, viewing old buildings in colonial days, Yangon river front and china town. Lunch will be served on the way to airport. Fly to Heho. From airport, it takes about 50 min drive to Nyaung Shwe, the entrance to Inlay lake. Before getting Nyaung Shwe, a couple of stops shall be made for taking photos and visit Shwe Yan Pyay old Shan monastery. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Nyaung Shwe.
Day 03/ 23 Nov 2015 Inle lake ( B / L / D )
Visit Inlay Lake exists 900 meters above the sea level and the home land of Inthar tribe. Visit the regional once in every fifth day market takes place around the different area of the Inle Lake if today coincides with the market day. Ngaphechaung monastery (formerly also known as jumping cat monastery for trained jumping cats) – more than one and a half century old monastery with its collection of ancient Buddha Images. Other attractions include unique leg-rowing style and fishing method of the Innthar; floating gardens and vegetable plantations; and weaving factory and black smith. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Nyaung Shwe.
Day 04/ 24 Nov 2015 Nyaung Shwe- Taungyi ( B / L / D )
After breakfast leisurely walk across Nyaung Shwe for an hour. At late morning heading to Taungyi. The town exists on First visit around Taungyi Bazar. From afternoon till night, enjoy the festival scene and revelers with colourful traditional dress.
Accommodation – Preferred stay at one hotel in Taungyi. Incase of no accommodation available, back to Nyaung Shwe.

Day 05/ 25 Nov 2011 Heho –Bagan flight Etd 16:00 ( 1:00 hr flying via Mdl) ( B / L / D )
After breakfast, have a panoramic view of Taungyi from the ridge on the east of the city, and the prominent high point, the spur. Then go about festival site to view more functions of festival competition. Lunch at a local restaurant.
At late afternoon fly to Bagan. The rest of evening, observation tour about Shwezigon pagoda site.
Day 06/ 26 Nov 2015 Bagan – Mt Popa ( B / L / D )
Bagan, one of Asia’s most popular archaeological destinations and one out of two most pre-eminent religious old cities in South East Asia.
After breakfast visit to Nyaung Oo market. Then drive to Popa. Visit home of 37 Nats(spirit beings). Mt. Popa Pagoda by climbing 777 steps with local visitors. Lunch at local restaurant. Late afternoon drive back to Bagan. View sunset from a temple terrace. After dinner, going about Shwezigon pagoda festival.
Day 07/ 27 Nov 2015 Bagan ( B / L / D )
Today visit Bagan to most distinctive pagodas and monuments: Gubyaukgyi Temple ( Wetkyiinn village) – the 13th century ‘cave temple’ with fine frescoes of scenes from Jakatas; Anada Temple – one of the masterpieces surviving and remaining in Bagan and considered to be in the Mon architecture style. A visit to the lacquer ware factory followed by a visit to local village. Optional horse-cart ride among the nooks of old temple is very exclusive experience.
Overnight in Bagan.
Day 08/ 28 Nov 2015 Bagan – Yangon – flight Etd 9:00 ( 1:15 hr flying) ( B / L / -)
Yangon – Onward departure flight
Upon arrival, stay at a big restaurant for short relax and dress up. Observation tour around Bogyoke market. Then transfer to your individual flight.
Those wish to extend Ngapali beach can start on day 28 Nov.
