Kyaukse is 52 km to the south of Mandalay, surrounded by rice paddies. The town is particularly famous for its innovative elephant dance competitions which is held in the eve of Thadingyut full moon day ( 27 October for 2015).

Legend has it that King Anawrahta pitched camp near Kyaukse as he was traveling back from China.

The ruler had brought various relics back form China with him, and he wanted to build a pagoda in a place worthy of them. He thus strapped the relics to the back of his elephant and let him go with the injunction that he guides him to a suitable location for the construction of the pagoda. The elephant went straight towards the hill east of Kyaukse and knelt down there, so King Anawrahta built the reclining Pagoda commemorating the Buddha’s death on this spot. In honor of that elephant, the inhabitants of Kyaukse celebrate “Elephant Festival”, with the elephant dance each year.

Elephant costumes are fashioned from bamboo, cloth and paper, and two men climb inside each one to perform in rhythm. Dance around the town to the accompaniment of Dobat and Drums. Elephant dance competitions include three types traditional elephant dance, calf (baby elephant) dance and decorated elephant dance.

The elephant dancers circle three times at the foot of Pagoda hill in the morning then proceed to several centers throughout the town. The festival is celebrated throughout the day drawing visitors from villages in the vicinity and also from Mandalay. The mood is really festive in Kyaukse at this time It is so lively, amazing and enjoyable.  Kyaukse elephant festival is really a landmark festival at the propitious period.
